Coins in the series
About the series
The year 2006 became a true breakthrough for the Kazakhstan Mint in terms of technology – the first of 12 bimetallic (composite) coins from the "Space" series was released into circulation. They have a circular shape consisting of a concentrically arranged ring and disc. The inner disc of the coin is made of tantalum, and the outer ring is made of silver. In the production of the coin, domestic specialists were the first in the world to use the rare-earth metal tantalum. Previously, no one had dared to work with it due to its ductility and tendency to "stick" to minting tools. Despite this, the technologists at the Kazakhstan Mint found a solution and developed their own unique metal processing technology.
In 2011, the Kazakhstan Mint received an innovation patent for the invention of the production of Kazakhstani coins with tantalum. Soon after, specialists developed technological methods for changing the color of tantalum.
